i moved to east harlem, new york in 2017 after completing my mfa (what cheer?). through these everyday views of the neighborhood, i communicate the feeling of living here, of being home and not at home in el barrio. this work explores boundaries and how they are defined - geographically, socially, and intuitively. the place i call home sometimes holds me at arms length, and rightfully so. traditional notions of the city’s neighborhoods as both spatially-bounded and culturally-distinct are being threatened by the in-migration of whiter populations. i reflect on this as i make these pictures, which are meant to be just as much a factual document as a living love letter to place.
